Safety Tips for Walking Your Dog at a Park

Taking your pup for a walk is a fun treat for you and your pet. It’s a great way to get some exercise and experience the great outdoors! It’s no secret that dogs love being surrounded with exciting scents and sights.

As much as we love our pets and other dogs, we can’t always control how others behave. We don’t always know what could trigger them or make them upset. This could be the case for any dog, not just rescues! We have to remember that they are still animals.

While it’s mostly preventable, we can’t always stop a scary situation from happening. Here’s a few things you can do to help prevent and navigate a scary situation while talking a walk at the park.

Prevention:

  • Have a bottle of water or a spray bottle ready. If a dog is latched onto another dog, shove water up the dog’s nose. This will stop the dog from breathing for a few seconds and they will release their jaw.
  • Have a blanket ready. Throw the blanket over the dogs to assist in breaking up a fight.
  • Leash up! Always keep your dog on a leash. This will help prevent fights and help you control your dog if there are any problems.
  • Keep conscious. While walking your dog, survey the area in front of you. If you see another dog off a leash, try to stay clear.
  • Practice walking your dog around your neighborhood. This is a great technique for puppies! To help your pup get used to the leash, take them on short walks around your house.

Navigation (if a fight breaks out with the goal being to separate them):

  • If a dog is biting/latched onto another dog – shove water up the dog’s nose using a bottle. This will stop the dog from breathing for a few seconds and they will release their jaw. If you have access to more water, like a hose, use the water to help break up the fight. You can also use a spray bottle to help stop the fight. This is a safe technique and no harm will be done to the dogs.
  • If two dogs are fighting – make loud noises to try to get the dog’s attention and to remove them from the scene. You can also throw a blanket over the dogs to assist in breaking up a fight.

DO NOT:

  • Grab hold of the dog.
  • Grab their mouth.
  • Pull their legs.
  • Kick or punch them.
